HIV and TB — new ways to tackle old problems
More than forty years into the HIV epidemic and decades into the global TB crisis, these diseases remain some of the world’s leading public health challenges. Audiences and journalists are well-acquainted with these epidemics, but need to find ways to stay constantly creative and relevant. What have editors and journalists from around the region learned about how to best cover these subject? How can we keep telling these stories in ways that feel fresh, urgent, and meaningful? This session will explore how coverage that leans on policy updates and statistics can centre people’s lives and communities. We will hear from editors from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho on how they report on HIV and TB without losing relevance and by centring communities. We’ll talk about stories that cut through the noise, from grassroots solutions and resilience, to the way HIV and TB connect with bigger issues like poverty, migration, and stigma.
