Explore the Wits University’s Origins Centre, Art Museum, Digital Dome and Life Sciences Museum

Scientific discoveries from a Global South perspective, with global relevance – meet and interact with world-class scientists from a range of fields.

Some of the highlights on the tour of Wits University include an immersive experience in a Digital Dome, exploring the past at the Origins Centre and the Fossil Vault (home of the Little Foot, Mrs Ples and Taung Child fossils), delving into African Art at the world-class Wits Art Museum, and learning about world leading photonics and quantum research in the Structured Light Laboratory.

A trip through the Wits Historical Papers library will give you a glimpse into some valuable archives and treasures including former president Nelson Mandela’s handwritten notes from the Rivonia Trial, ancient tapestries and other works.

Journalists can meet and interact with leading scientists in climate change, sustainability and inequality; innovation, AI and quantum technologies; health advances in Africa; the palaeosciences; art and the humanities; and scientific discoveries from a Global South perspective.

Itinerary

09:00 Pick up at the CSIR International Convention Centre (CSIR ICC)
10:00 Arrive at Wits University
10:15 Refreshments and briefings by the Wits Vice-Chancellor and the Principal
10:30 Walk to the Wits Origins Centre
13:00 Lunch at the Wits Origins Centre
14:00 Transfer to the Wits Art Museum and welcome by the Curator followed by a tour of the museum and exhibitions
15:30 Walk to the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome and experience a show hosted by Dr Moumita Aich, the Director of the Dome
15:00 Transfer to the CSIR ICC
16:00 Drop off at the CSIR ICC
