A field trip to the University of Pretoria’s Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure, and to Moja Gabedi, a vibrant community engagement hub.
Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure
UP launched the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (NuMeRI) in 2024 – Africa’s first state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing medical imaging and nuclear medicine.
NuMeRI aims to accelerate the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis through cutting-edge imaging technologies and targeted therapies. Equipped with two cyclotrons – one for commercial use and one for research – it supports both academic researchers and healthcare companies in maintaining a competitive edge globally.
This tour offers journalists an exclusive look inside NuMeRI’s advanced laboratories and imaging suites, showcasing how innovation and technology are revolutionising healthcare in South Africa. Journalists will gain insights into how precision medicine, nuclear imaging and clinical research are improving patient outcomes and addressing critical healthcare challenges.

Moja Gabedi community engagement hub
Once a neglected rubbish dump and hotspot for crime, Moja Gabedi in Hatfield has been transformed into a vibrant community engagement hub and green urban oasis.
The site now thrives as a space for learning, social impact and environmental regeneration—embodying the spirit of Ubuntu, the belief that “I am because we are.” It is a truly African experience that reflects UP’s commitment to making a difference beyond the lab and lecture hall.
Delegates will be hosted by Prof. Francis Petersen, UP’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and will explore lush gardens, therapy spaces and innovative community projects born from collaboration between students, staff and local residents.
