Sneak peek of what to expect at WCSJ 2025
4 August 2025
We’re deeply grateful to our WCSJ 2025 Programme Committee, comprising senior science journalists from Africa, Europe, and the Americas, for their thoughtful review of the many session and workshops submissions received for the conference, and for shaping a rich, inclusive programme that promises something for everyone.
The selection process has been completed and the main programme, featuring speakers from more than 57 countries, bringing together a wide range of formats – from panels and debates to skill-building workshops, is being prepared for release.
Sessions will explore the impact of politics, conflict, funding cuts, artificial intelligence, and disinformation on science journalism, particularly in covering key issues like climate change, health, the environment, indigenous communities, and children. The ethics of reporting on mental health will be under the spotlight, alongside discussions on the mental health challenges faced by journalists themselves.
A diverse array of topics is on the agenda, including lithium mining, carbon credits, archaeology, astronomy in Africa, wildlife reporting, pathogens, traditional medicines, and energy systems. Open sessions will invite participants to candidly share their most embarrassing professional moments or stories of how their work contributed to social justice.
As is tradition at WCSJ events, journalists will be able to pitch their story ideas to a panel of international editors – and gain practical tips on how to improve their chances of being published.
Workshops will offer hands-on learning opportunities, from applying WFSJ’s ethical guidelines in practice, to becoming a more effective moderator or opinion writer. Others will focus on using AI and data visualisation tools and tackling challenges such as antimicrobial resistance. (Opportunities are also still open to sponsor further workshops, should you be interested please contact us at partners@wcsj2025.org)
Keep an eye out for the detailed programme and opening of registration coming up in August.
We look forward to welcoming you to South Africa from 1 to 5 December 2025.
