Her skill in this field was acknowledged when she earned second place as European Science Journalist of the years in 2022 (award by Elsevier and the European Federation of Science Journalists).

She has racked up an impressive number of certificates from very relevant courses, including a certificate in climate change journalism and a number of courses on disinformation and fact-checking, including a WHO Infodemic management training in 2021, and an Advanced Fact-Checking Workshop Knight Science Journalism programme at MIT, in December 2022.

Jelena has her own science blog, she does science journalism for Voice of America Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is the founder, writer and editor of Nauka govori website (Science Speaks website naukagovori.ba), among a range of other responsibilities, including that of climate change journalism trainer. She has used her understanding of fake information and fact-checking to good effect in her own country during the pandemic.
