Connecting global science to local narratives – spotlight on Ghana

Global research breakthroughs in health, climate resilience, and technology have the power to transform lives, but their impact depends on how these stories are understood and applied locally. This workshop explores how media can work with international universities to tell stories that help bridge the gap between cutting-edge global research and local communities.

Imperial College London recently became the first UK university to establish a permanent base in Africa dedicated to science and technology with the launch of Imperial Global Ghana. Reporters will hear about some of the major projects between Imperial and partners in Africa, how it engages science journalists through research centre visits, media briefings, expert panels, and impact reports, and future opportunities for journalists to interact with the university.

This session invites reporters to discuss and share strategies for identifying local relevance in international collaborations and how to navigate challenges in reporting complex global science. The session will be especially relevant for journalists from Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria, but all are welcome.
