WORKSHOP

Moderating for impact

Science writers are often asked to facilitate discussions in a range of professional and public contexts, through moderating panels or participating as panellists. Taking on these roles can also be an important source of income and professional experience. How they perform in these roles impacts audiences’ grasp of the issue at hand. However, there is little training for journalists on how to maximise the impacts of these experiences.

When we moderate and host events, it’s an opportunity to enhance audience experience, communicate critical information and address inequities in who gets air time. How can we moderate and host events that are inclusive and engaging?

This workshop will provide the opportunity to explore these and many other questions through brainstorming, sharing hosting victories and horror stories, and role playing. We will practice the art of hosting and moderating, with instructors and participants bringing diverse experiences, skills, and talents to the table.
