The future of industrial work – A field trip to the CSIR Learning Factory and Mobile Robotics Laboratory.

The CSIR Learning Factory

The CSIR Learning Factory demonstrates how building skills in Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies is driving digital transformation in South African manufacturing and contributing to a sustainable future.

Technologies that form part of the facility and will be on display include: collaborative robots that demonstrate the integration of machine–human interaction using 4IR technologies; 4IR production and assembly cells, highlighting human-centred automation; virtual reality, enabling users to operate industry-standard equipment in a virtual environment; augmented reality, showcasing its ability to accelerate learning by providing hands-on experience with interactive overlays, as well as enabling rapid prototyping and design validation; and a demonstration of 4IR technologies in a home environment, illustrating how these advancements enhance everyday living by enabling real-time monitoring of electricity usage, providing insights into energy consumption patterns, and promoting energy efficiency.

The CSIR Mobile Robotics Laboratory

At the CSIR Mobile Robotics Laboratory, cutting-edge robotic solutions will be demonstrated for enhanced safety, security and automation, contributing to a sustainable and technologically advanced future.

Researchers will present an autonomous security and surveillance robot designed for perimeter monitoring and patrols. This demonstration highlights the role of advanced robotics in strengthening safety and security, a key theme in building resilient communities. They will also showcase how various capabilities – including three-dimensional mapping, localisation, camera-based navigation and gesture control – add value.

The World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) will take place at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa from 1 – 5 December 2025, with the theme “Science journalism and social justice: journalism that builds understanding and resilience”.
