Engela Duvenage

Engela Duvenage is an award-winning South African freelance science journalist who regularly writes for the Nature Africa website in diverse fields such as the environmental, health and innovation sectors. She is responsible for an environmental column in the Afrikaans magazine Lig, and contributes articles related to agrisciences and climate science to the agricultural magazine Landbouweekblad. She also writes for the inhouse publications of various South African and international research entities.

She is the author of two children’s books featuring more than 100 scientists, engineers and inventors with South African links. Inventors, Bright Minds and Other Science Heroes of South Africa (Penguin) was published in 2021. It followed on Uitvinders, Planmakers en ander Slimkoppe van Suid-Afrika (LAPA), published in Afrikaans in 2020, and updated and reprinted in 2023. In 2023 she was invited to attend the World Conference for Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Columbia to discuss her books along with other journalists who had also written science-focused books.

Duvenage holds an MPhil degree in Science Journalism from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
